Lexus Key Replacement
Lexus, being Toyota’s luxury division, uses some of the most advanced key technology, especially in high-end models (e.g. smart keys that also enable push-button ignition and proximity entry). Replacing a Lexus key can be very expensive, particularly if all keys are lost. Dealership quotes in the high hundreds are common. In one extreme case, a Lexus owner reported a dealer quote of \$1,500 to replace a lost key on a newer Lexus. (That quote was broken down as roughly \$300 for the new smart key itself and a whopping \$1,200 in programming labor, which allegedly could take hours – this might have involved replacing or reflashing the immobilizer system, hence the huge cost) While that’s an outlier, it underlines that Lexus dealers charge a premium for keys, especially for sophisticated systems like the Lexus smart keys. More typically, a dealer might charge around $400 for a Lexus key fob replacement (for example, dealer price ~$364 for a new OEM Lexus smart key fob, as listed by one parts source, plus labor). Owners have found alternatives though: some locksmiths or automotive security specialists can do Lexus keys for less. One Lexus owner on a forum had a Hi-Tech locksmith (using official Lexus parts) provide and program a new RX SUV key fob for $395 total, which was at least lower than the dealer. Others have managed around $200–$300 by using third-party keys or buying a key online and paying a locksmith to program it. The catch is that not every locksmith can handle Lexus/Toyota smart key coding, especially for the latest models that use encryption and require a seed code from Toyota’s security system. But many can, and they often advertise being able to do “80% of dealer keys” at much lower cost. If you lose a Lexus key, it’s worth checking if your insurance covers it (some key protection plans cover up to $800). If not, call around to high-end locksmiths – you may find one that can do it for a few hundred dollars less than the dealer. Just ensure they guarantee the key will work, since Lexus keys must be perfectly programmed to start the car. In summary, Lexus key replacement is among the most costly (on par with the German luxury brands). It can range from about $250 on the low end (with third-party help) to $1000+ on the high end (dealer doing a full immobilizer reset). Plan ahead and get a spare made when you buy the car, if possible, to avoid the nightmare scenario of having no key at all!
