Honda Key Replacement
Honda has implemented transponder chips in keys starting around 2000, and later push-button start smart fobs on newer models, so the cost and process to replace a Honda key is similar to other Japanese brands like Toyota. A Honda dealer will typically charge on the order of $200–$300 for a new key fob including programming. For example, one report cited about $300 to replace and program a smart key for a late-model Honda Accord (around $150 for the key device and $150 for programming, roughly). Traditional Honda keys (non-fob) with just a chip are a bit cheaper but still usually over $100 at the dealer because of the programming. However, like others, Honda keys can be replaced by locksmiths often at lower cost. It’s not unusual for a local locksmith to do a Honda transponder key for, say, $150 total. In some cases, hardware stores (like certain Ace Hardware locations) can even copy older Honda keys if they have the programming equipment – for example, owners of early 2010s Hondas (with simpler immobilizer systems) have gotten duplicates made for under $50 at hardware stores, which is a steal. But for most scenarios (lost all keys, or high-end fob), you’ll need a locksmith with Honda key programming tools or a dealer. One advantage with Honda is that on some models, if you have one working key, adding a second one can be done by an on-board procedure (check your owner’s manual) or relatively quickly by a locksmith – so it’s wise to get a spare made when you can. If you lose all keys, the dealer may need to connect to Honda’s database to program new ones, or a locksmith might use a diagnostic tool to do the same. The costs between dealer and locksmith for Honda are usually not dramatically different (locksmith might be slightly cheaper). For instance, Honda CR-V owners noted local dealers and locksmiths both asking around $225-$250 to cut and program a new key fob. The benefit of the locksmith is often convenience (they come to you) and avoiding the dealership labor fees. In summary, Honda key replacement is fairly standard: expect a couple hundred dollars cost; try a locksmith for possibly better pricing, and definitely have all existing keys present if a dealer reprograms (so they can remove any lost key from the system). And if your Honda is an older model without a chip, congratulations – you can copy that key for a few bucks at many places!
