Mazda Key Replacement
Mazda has used electronic immobilizer keys in most models since the late 1990s, so replacing a lost Mazda key usually involves the same considerations as Ford (with whom Mazda has shared some technology historically). If you have an older Mazda (early 2000s or prior) with a simple metal key and no chip, a locksmith or even hardware store can copy it cheaply. But for any Mazda with a transponder chip (most post-2000 models) or a push-button start fob (found on newer Mazdas), you’ll need a programmed key. Mazda dealers can supply new keys, but again typically at a cost of a few hundred dollars once you include cutting and programming. For example, the average dealer price for a modern Mazda fob might be in the $200–$300 range, similar to a Ford or Honda, since the technology is comparable. However, locksmiths are fully capable of Mazda key replacement in most cases. Many Mazda models allow on-board programming of a new key if you have two valid keys present – but if all keys are lost, a locksmith can plug into the car’s OBD port and program a new one. The cost via an independent locksmith is often lower; you might pay on the order of $150 for a Mazda transponder key instead of $250 at a dealer. One thing to note: some Mazdas (especially push-start models around 2004-2010) require entering a special code to program keys, which dealerships have access to. Some locksmiths can get these codes or bypass them, but not all. Still, cases where only a dealer can do it are rare. In short, Mazda key copying/replacement is not as locked-down as brands like Mercedes – a well-equipped locksmith should handle it. As always, get a quote: for instance, if the dealer says “it’ll be $350,” check with a local auto locksmith who might quote “$150 and I’ll come to you.” Chances are good you’ll save money with the latter. And if you own a Mazda, it’s good practice (as with any car) to have a spare key made while you have a working one, to avoid the higher costs of programming a completely lost key situation.
